The drive: Fayetteville, N.C. to Huntsville

The fastest route we computed heads south on I-95 and picks up I-20 west through Columbia, S.C., and Atlanta. North of Atlanta it leaves the interstate and crosses northeast Alabama before taking US-72 into Huntsville. An all-interstate option is to stay on I-75 north to Chattanooga and take I-24 and US-72 from there.[3] Compare it with other routes in a live maps app for current traffic, construction and weather. If you're moving under orders, check what your travel entitlements cover before you plan stops.[7]

At about 550 miles, some families do it in one long day and others split it with a stop around Atlanta. You can search hotels along your route on Expedia. For your first nights in North Alabama, compare Huntsville hotels on Hotels.com (affiliate link: we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you; see our disclosure). Book refundable rooms if your pickup or delivery dates might still change.

The annual averages are close: Fayetteville's airport averages 63.0°F and 44.58 inches of precipitation, while Huntsville's averages 62.9°F and 54.29 inches, so expect about 10 more inches of rain and snow a year. NOAA's normals file for the Fayetteville station doesn't include a snowfall normal; Huntsville's is 2.4 inches (1991-2020 normals). North Alabama also gets severe storms and tornadoes, so learn tornado safety and sign up for alerts from the National Weather Service Huntsville office.[4,5,8,9]
