If you're a military spouse moving to Redstone Arsenal, you have more tools than most people know about. Alabama requires most licensing boards to fast-track spouse licenses, it belongs to many interstate licensing compacts, federal hiring has spouse-specific paths, and there's free career help on post. Here's how it fits together, with a link to the official source for every rule.
Start here: the State's licensing board list
The State of Alabama's Heroes Welcome site, run by the Alabama Military Stability Foundation, keeps the official list of Alabama licensing boards for military spouses. Search it for your profession and you'll find the board's point-of-contact email and a link to its website and application. The same page has a Military Spouse Licensure Portability Checklist and a summary of every spouse licensing law Alabama has passed.[1] Check it again close to your move, since the State updates it.
Bringing a professional license to Alabama
There are three routes, and which one applies depends on your profession.
1. Alabama's Military Family Jobs Opportunity Act
Under this state law, first passed in 2018, most Alabama licensing boards must have rules to do two things for an eligible spouse who holds a substantially similar license in good standing in another state or in the armed forces:[2,1]
- Issue an Alabama license or certificate within 30 days of application, or
- Let you work under a temporary permit, good for at least 360 days, while the board decides on your application.
Boards must also waive the initial licensing fee when you apply for the waiver, and process that request within 30 days.[2]
Who's eligible: spouses of active-duty, Reserve, National Guard and transitioning service members stationed in Alabama on official orders, and surviving spouses of members who died on active duty. Expansions in 2022 and 2023 added spouses of relocated Department of Justice and NASA employees and spouses of Department of War civil servants working in Alabama, which matters in a place with as many civilians as Redstone Arsenal.[2,1]
Who's not covered: the law doesn't apply to attorneys, securities licenses, peace officer certification, or professions regulated by the Board of Pharmacy, Board of Optometry, Board of Dental Examiners, Board of Chiropractic Examiners, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Board or State Board of Medical Examiners.[2] Several of those fields have a compact instead (below), and attorneys have their own route.
2. An interstate compact
If your profession has a compact and your home state belongs too, you may be able to practice in Alabama under a multistate license or privilege to practice. The Council of State Governments lists these licensing compacts for Alabama (year joined):[3,1]
| Compact | Alabama joined |
|---|---|
| Interstate Medical Licensure Compact | 2015 |
| Emergency Medical Services Personnel Licensure Compact | 2017 |
| Nurse Licensure Compact | 2020 |
| Physical Therapy Licensure Compact | 2021 |
| Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) | 2021 |
| Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology Interstate Compact | 2021 |
| Occupational Therapy Licensure Compact | 2022 |
| Counseling Compact | 2022 |
| Interstate Teacher Mobility Compact | 2023 |
| Cosmetology Compact | 2023 |
| Social Work Compact | 2024 |
| Dietitian Licensure Compact | 2024 |
| Respiratory Care Interstate Compact | 2025 |
| Interstate Compact for School Psychologists | 2025 |
| PA (physician assistant) Licensure Compact | 2026 |
| Esthetics Licensure Compact | 2026 |
| Athletic Trainer Compact | 2026 |
A compact can take time to start issuing privileges after a state joins. Confirm the current status with the Alabama board before you count on one, especially a compact Alabama joined recently.[3]
3. The federal license portability law
Federal law (50 U.S.C. §4025a) says that when a servicemember gets orders to a new state, a spouse's license in good standing is treated as valid for the same scope of practice in the new state once you apply to the board with your orders, your marriage certificate and a notarized affidavit. If the board can't act within 30 days, it may issue a temporary license. The board may run a background check. Professions covered by a compact follow the compact instead.[4]
Lawyers: the Alabama State Bar has a military spouse exemption, and Alabama works in partnership with the Military Spouse JD Network. Both are linked from the State's licensing board page.[1]
Get relicensing costs reimbursed
Each military service can reimburse up to $1,000 per move for a spouse's relicensing and certification costs, or business costs, after a PCS within the United States or from overseas to the States. Each service sets its own procedure, so ask your unit or call a Military OneSource SpouseWorks career coach at 800-342-9647.[5]
Federal jobs at Redstone
Redstone Arsenal is full of federal employers, and spouses have two main hiring tools:
- Military Spouse Preference (MSP) is a Department of War program. If you're among the best qualified for a Department of War job in the commuting area of the new duty station, you must be selected before other best-qualified candidates. You must be the accompanying spouse on PCS orders and married before your sponsor's reporting date. Submit the DD 3145-4 self-certification checklist with each application. Accepting or declining a permanent position in the commuting area ends your MSP until the next PCS.[6,7]
- Noncompetitive appointment lets any federal agency hire an eligible spouse without competing against the public, for permanent or temporary jobs. It covers spouses of active-duty members, spouses of members who were 100% disabled due to service, and unremarried widows and widowers of members killed on active duty. Agencies don't have to use it, and you still have to apply and meet the qualifications. In USAJOBS, look for "Military spouses" under "This job is open to," or use the Military spouses search filter.[8,9,7]
For noncompetitive appointments made on or after January 1, 2029, active-duty spouses will also need PCS orders and a marriage date on or before those orders.[9]

Private-sector employers
The Military Spouse Employer Partnership (MSEP) is a network of employers that have committed to recruit, hire, promote and retain military spouses. Its job board is on Military OneSource's SpouseWorks site (formerly SECO), which also offers free career coaching.[11,6,5] Many large Huntsville employers are defense contractors and engineering firms; the Chamber's leading-employers list is a good place to see who's here, and our Cummings Research Park guide covers the biggest office hub.[12]
